Te Puia Te Rā: Guided Day Tour with Haka Cultural Performance
About This Experience
Te Rā is Te Puia's daytime programme, and this version adds the cultural performance to it — the combination most visitors actually want if they are only going to Te Puia once. It is the daytime counterpart to the Whakarewarewa village walk on the other side of the same geothermal field, and the two make a natural pair rather than a choice.
The guided portion runs 90 minutes through the Te Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley with a kaiārahi, taking in Pōhutu Geyser, the mud pools and the native bush, and stopping at the Kiwi Conservation Centre, where kiwi are kept in a nocturnal enclosure. The guides tell the valley's history through ancestral narrative rather than as a geology lecture.
The other half is the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute — the wānanga where students learn whakairo (carving), raranga (weaving) and bone and stone work. You watch the school working, which is the part of Te Puia that has no equivalent anywhere else in Rotorua. The visit finishes with the pōhiri and performance in the carved meeting house Te Aronui a Rua.

What is the difference between Te Rā and Te Pō at Te Puia?
Te Rā is the daytime guided experience through the geothermal valley, the kiwi centre and the carving school. Te Pō is the evening programme, which swaps the day tour for a hāngī buffet and Pōhutu after dark. This ticket is Te Rā with the cultural performance added.
Will I see a kiwi at Te Puia?
The Kiwi Conservation Centre keeps kiwi in a nocturnal enclosure specifically so visitors can see them awake. They are live animals in a dark enclosure, so a sighting is very likely but not contractual.
Can you watch the carvers working?
Yes. The New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute is a working wānanga, and seeing students at the carving and weaving benches is part of the guided route. It runs to a school timetable, so activity varies by day and hour.
Is lunch included?
No. Food and drinks are not included, though there is a café on site. Transport to and from Te Puia is also not included on this option.
Should I visit Te Puia or Whakarewarewa village?
They sit on opposite sides of the same geothermal valley and answer different questions.
